12 Rainy Day Activities for Kids
It’s Spring but that also means rainy season. Staying inside all day can drive the kids (and parents) crazy. Looking for other forms of entertainment besides watching TV or playing video games? I have gathered 12 fun activities to help the kids fight boredom without destroying the home (hopefully).
Build a blanket fort
This is an easy rainy day activity that encourages kids to use their imagination. Help your child get started then let them create their own fort. Use what you have around the house. They can pretend to go camping or just relax.
Fly paper airplanes
My son loves flying paper airplanes. They are easy to make and lots of fun. Have a race to see who gets the furthest or throw them through a hula hoop.
Indoor picnic
Lay an outdoor tablecloth or an old blanket on the floor for a nice indoor picnic with the kids. Set out some plates with snacks and drinks. Have your child bring their favorite toy as their special guest.
Play with puzzles
A puzzle is an easy way to keep the kids occupied especially if there are many small pieces. If you have younger children, use floor puzzles to keep them busy or set out several board puzzles.
Bake cookies
I didn’t grow up baking but I love making cookies with my son. It’s a great rainy day activity. Let the kids help in the kitchen with baking their favorite sweet treat. Things may get a little messy and take a little longer but it will be worth it.
Blow bubbles
This activity is always a hit with kids. Blowing bubbles is not just for outside fun. Grab a bubble machine or bottles and have a blast. If you do not want to get your floor wet, lay some plastic tablecloths on the ground. If you want to make this activity competitive, see who blows the biggest bubble. Don’t forget to play some music to turn it into a bubble dance party.
Balloon tennis
This activity will get everyone moving around the house. All you need is some balloons and either a fly swatter or paddle. If you need one, make your own using paper plates and popsicle sticks for the handles. Move any furniture that may get in the way of all the fun.
Alphabet Find
This is a cute and educational game for younger kids. The only thing you need is some tape, a permanent marker, and construction paper. Cut the paper in half and write a letter on each one. Tape the paper to the walls around your home in random order. Make sure to put them at your child’s eye level. The only thing you need to do is call out the letters as your kids’ race around to find it. They must touch the letter then race back to you in order to move on to the next one.
Build with blocks
Find all your blocks or LEGOs and let the kids build whatever they want. Make it competitive by having a contest to see who can build certain things like a car or building. They can also work together to build something cool.
Hide and Seek
This classic game is fun for everyone including pets. Our family dog enjoys searching for us when we hide.
Color hunt
All you need is different colored pieces of construction paper for this fun rainy day activity. Send your kids off to find small objects that match the color on the pieces of paper. You can keep things simple by only using a few colors.
Obstacle course
This was a huge hit for my preschool students on rainy days. Create a fun indoor obstacle course using items around the house. Make sure it includes a variety of motions such as jumping and crawling. Keep in my mind the number of children as well as their ages when creating your obstacle course. My son had a great time doing this activity.
