Earth Day is a great yearly reminder to do our part to contribute to a cleaner planet. It’s also the perfect time to teach children the importance of protecting the environment. Here’s 6 ways to make this Earth Day a celebration with the family.
Hiking or Nature Walk
Going outside to celebrate Earth Day is a fun way to spend time with family. It’s also a great way to teach your kids about the environment. Visit a local park with a trail and explore the area. Talk about the plants and wildlife you see during your visit. Take pictures so you can have a discussion when you get home. If you have older children, turn your little adventure into a scavenger hunt.
Plant Something
I’ll be honest, I do not have a green thumb. Surprisingly, I grew up with a grandmother who had a nice garden with vegetables and fruits. She also planted beautiful flowers throughout her yard. Planting trees or starting a garden is one of the best ways to give back to our planet and celebrate Earth Day. If you don’t have room outside, create an indoor garden with some herbs or vegetables.
Recycle
One of the best ways to reduce your environmental footprint is to encourage recycling in your home. If your apartment complex or subdivision does not provide recycling bins, search for the nearest recycling center. I’m embarrassed to say this, but I find it easier to just collect my recyclables and take them my parents who live out of town (laughs in shame). I do not encourage this. Find your local recycling center. There are also stores that allow drop offs for plastic bags, batteries or bottles.
Reuse Materials for Arts and Crafts
My son, like most kids, love to do crafts. There are so many cool things to make using recycled materials around your home. Check out this great list of recycled art projects to help celebrate Earth Day.
Clean Up Your Neighborhood
Spend a few minutes or hours with your children cleaning and picking up trash in your neighborhood. Make sure your child only picks up paper or plastic products. Stop by your local park, playground, or beach to clean up trash and collect recyclables. Explain why it is important to keep our planet clean and not litter. Make sure everyone wear gloves!
