Reflections on a High School Graduate and the Journey Ahead

Adorned in cap and gown, the small blonde kid we’ve grown into a man walks across the stage and into the next steps towards adulthood next week. He will toss his cap in the air and officially be a high school graduate.

One long chapter filled with lessons, tests, homework, and school projects on giant poster board closes. It seems like just yesterday he was graduating elementary school. Parenthood makes time fly.

Yet here we are, with another brand new and exciting time about to begin. This chapter will find him in a new school, in a new city, hours away from home and family.

New Adventures Await

He will learn to navigate this new community while managing a full workload of classes. He will make new friends, discover new interests and ideas, and continue the evolution from child to adult.

How excited I am for you, Damon, for all the adventures that await. And, maybe a bit jealous, as it has been years since I graduated from college. Despite the years, I can remember vividly, the classes that inspired me and the amazing campus, that was home for those years.

I Wish For You

My hope for you is that you are inspired beyond measure. Sign up for every course and join any club that you think may be of interest to you. You never know where you will discover your passion. The options are bountiful so take advantage. It could be the beginning of a journey to the career of your dreams, one you may never have considered.

Make sure you step outside the box. You’ve spent your entire scholastic career amongst the same friends joined together by default of living in the same school district. Now is your time to expand your horizons. Talk to people. Befriend folks who you never thought you’d find common ground with. Learn to appreciate that differences are beautiful. You may find lifelong friends from unexpected places.

Think before you act and make good choices. I am learning the hardest part is letting go and being confident that you will remember what we’ve taught. Please think of the values your families have instilled in you as you make decisions. Beware of temptation as it will lurk around you.

Enjoy your freedom but remember you are there to learn. One last thing…When you do make dumb choices, because you will, keep it off social media! Social media is forever. Don’t make that mistake.

Don’t Forget the Little People

And, somewhere in your new busy life, find a moment to call your little siblings. You will be missed like crazy. And one day, when you are adults, I am sure you will be great friends. Facetime so you can still watch them grow up. You will one day look back fondly on those moments. Remember how much you are admired.

Know that no matter how far away you reside or how old you become, your family will always be just a text, call, or car ride away. And we will always be there to support you.

The Places You Will Go

As Dr. Seuss wrote, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go.”
